The Ken Mason handmade custom tile collections are handmade from raw clay body to glaze application. Each handmade tile collection, although able to be mixed with any other series, is a complete system unto itself. Each contains its own handmade moldings, handmade tiles of various sizes and shapes, handmade relief pieces, mosaics and hand painted artwork. There are various bisque styles, colors, and finishing techniques. As varied as Fresco to transparent gloss glazes, from Metals to various colored Encaustic style handmade tile and molding to finely hand painted murals and designed pieces. There are handmade field tiles to match all of the decorative pieces. All our colors and finishes are available in most of KMT/BCIA collections, as well as the standard pallet each series offers. If your project requires special colors or finishes custom matching is available and encouraged. KMT/BCIA also offers 3 quick ship programs that are stocked. South Beach, Basix and Simple Satin n' Gloss, all have field tile of various sizes, handmade trim & moldings, all in there own unique exclusive color pallet. We also maintain inventory of bisque for all our collections. We stock our Carved Stone collection and stain it to order. In 1964, on a visit to the World’s Fair in New York held in a borough of Queens known as Flushing Meadows Park, the Mexican Pavilion is where the inspiration and conception of Elon® took place.

Parts of the Mexican Pavilion were adorned with Talavera tiles. These handmade, hand-painted tiles whose original designs are from Talavera, Spain are what Elon® embraced and began to import and distribute in the U.S. With over 100 different Talavera designs, Elon® renamed many to help market them in the United States. With names such as Bouquet, Damask and Arbor, these designs were easily integrated into the minds of designers, architects and builders across the country.

Elon® then partnered the Talavera tiles with Mexican unglazed Terra Cotta and registered these under the name of Carrillo.

In 1971, Ken Rossomando became the President of Elon® Inc. He realized that the American market, although still infatuated with Talavera and Terra Cotta, were also seeking more refined materials. Mr. Rossomando traveled to Europe and defined exclusive lines of hand-painted ceramic tiles with manufacturers in Italy, England, Portugal and France.

Mr. Rossomando, understanding the need to continuously evolve, also began to import over 100 different stones whose origins include Brazil, China, Israel, Italy, India, Mexico and Spain. Over the years Elon® has maintained inventories of 5/8” mosaics up to 24” x 24” tile in these stones.

The natural stone products that Thorntree purveys were formed in nature millions of years ago. While we haven’t been around nearly that long, founder Stuart Rae is no newcomer– he’s accumulated over 35 years of stone knowledge. Stuart and his dad, Clive, set up shop in 1980, shortly after the Rae family arrived in Texas from South Africa (listen to Stuart’s accent).  Their first shop was a small office and adjoining warehouse on West 34th Street.  From there, they primarily sold slate roof tiles to a small but forward-thinking group of custom home builders.  Father and son then went on to calling on architects (from the big book known back then as the Houston Yellow Pages), showing Thorntree’s first line of natural slate flooring in five colors, imported from South Africa.  Eventually, in the early 90’s they opened a small showroom in Highland Village, near the Galleria, which introduced Thorntree’s name and unique slate products into the retail Houston market.  This showroom space was managed by Stuart’s mom, Berry Rae, who was instrumental in the early success of Thorntree, spending 15 years working tirelessly building the design and builder clientele that would be key in the company’s early and growing success.   Since the early days as a natural stone company, Thorntree has evolved into a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional entity, supplying some of the most highly celebrated commercial and residential projects throughout the nation with refined glass, hand-painted tiles, and the world’s finest porcelain. 35 years later, Thorntree now has two Houston locations, both have full service showroom galleries.
