Natural Countertop Material Notes
Granite, marble, and quartzite are all products of nature. As with all natural material, no two slabs are exactly the same. Natural countertops will have variations in color, mineral deposits, texture, veining, and directional trends. These characteristics add to the beauty of the stone and make your tops unique from any other.
- Samples viewed are intended to serve as general examples, not exact replicas of the product you will receive. To ensure satisfaction, customers may view slabs at either our shop or at the stone importer before fabrication begins. We recommend this because some materials have greater variance in texture than others.
- All natural countertops are sealed by stone manufacturers or suppliers before Bella Maria receives the slabs to make them stain-resistant. Natural stone is not stain-proof. We recommend that clients and homeowners apply another coat of sealer within two weeks of installation and establish a maintenance schedule. Marble is softer and more porous than granite and requires extra maintenance. This also applies to non-traditional finishes on granite, such as honed or leathered finishes.
- Seams may be added or relocated at the time of fabrication at the sole discretion of Bella Maria Inc. due to restrictions including, but not limited to, slab size, cabinet layout, weight, and job-site access. A request to change a seam location, or a request to participate in laying out the template on the slabs, must be specified in writing and approved by Bella Maria before production and may require a quote revision.
- Bella Maria will make every effort to strategically fabricate and align pieces to avoid problems arising from variations in natural stone. Bella Maria assumes no responsibility for material claims based solely on these variations.
- All appliances, sinks, fixtures, and other items used in conjunction with or affected by the final countertop pieces must be on-site at the time of template. Farm sinks must be permanently installed before the template.
- Any customer responsibilities required before installation, including job readiness, must be completed before the installation date. Items that are not completed may result in cancellation and rescheduling of the installation appointment. Trip charges will apply.
- If Bella Maria Inc. is hired to demo and remove existing countertops, all plumbing, electrical, and gas fixtures must be disconnected before our arrival.
- The contract price is for template, material, fabrication, delivery, and installation of countertops only. The contract price includes mounting of an undermount sink. Bella Maria will not reconnect plumbing, electrical, or gas fixtures.
- Any return trips or canceled appointments caused by anyone other than an employee of Bella Maria may result in a $96 return-trip charge payable directly to Bella Maria.
- Due to the labor-intensive and time-consuming nature of stone fabrication, adjustments or remake pieces may require rescheduling of the installation date. Bella Maria will make every effort to notify the customer of rescheduling changes caused by unforeseen circumstances before the installation date.
I have read and understood the above notes. I will not hold Bella Maria responsible for misuse or damage caused by negligence or the inherent properties of this material. I have viewed my slabs and have found them acceptable with respect to the items above.
Marble, Limestone, Travertine, and Similar Stone
Marble, limestone, travertine, and similar stone surfaces are more susceptible to staining from many common liquids, such as mustard, oil, vinegar, citrus juice, toothpaste, mouthwash, hairspray, and similar substances. Any acidic substance that comes in contact with marble countertops may cause a chemical reaction that etches the surface and removes its polish.
- These materials are natural products that are more porous than granite and therefore more susceptible to staining and chipping.
- These materials are softer and may scratch more easily.
- These materials may come with surface scratches and fissures, a form of crack that has no stone content and is usually filled with clear resin.
- These materials may have extrusions, which are small visual cracks that are not faults in the marble slab.
- These materials may have marks of efflorescence, which appears as a white powdery residue on the surface of the stone.
- These materials may have shade, veining, and pattern variances from one end of the slab to the other.
- These materials may lose their shine with wear.
- These materials require frequent applications of sealant.
- Seams in these countertops are visible and can be felt when you run your hand along them.
- These materials require periodic sealing. Natural stone should be cleaned with natural-stone cleaner only. This is the homeowner’s responsibility.
Seam locations are at the sole discretion of the fabricator unless specified in writing before production. A change in seam location may require the quote to be revised.
